Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 152
Episode, one 52 of the marketing life podcast. This is Tim or Timothy, your host. And today guys, Google just announced that they are going to be removing phrase match and broad match keywords. Now I’m going to show you guys what these are in my actual box on this entire process. So let’s not waste any more time dive right in.
Google is Removing Phrase Match and Broad Keywords
So guys, my own opinion with this is it kind of stinks. And here’s why, so I want to give you guys a little breakdown of what they’re talking about and what they’re doing. So I’m over here on Google site. If you can see my screen for your listeners out there on the podcast, uh, just listen in here.
Google Announcement Example
So they give us an example of a phrase, moving services, New York, to Boston, and that’s in a phrase match form. And then we have moving plus services plus New York plus to Boston. And basically that’s a broad modifier keyword. Now, most of the time when I run campaigns, I recommend using exact phrase match or exact match keywords cause you can be more specific. But as if you read here on Google, I came in here and read this article of what they’re explaining of what’s going on. And basically they’re telling you, you don’t need to take any specific action for your phrase match or broad modifier keywords in order to see these changes. If you have any further questions about this, you can review this.
But as I was reading in here, they said that the freight you, if you put in a phrase match, it basically will pop up something similar to like what it is. So here it is.
So they use, they said this, for example, the phrase match keyword, moving services, New York to Boston, we’ll continue to cover searches like affordable moving services near New York to Boston. It will cover searches that traditionally only matched under broad match modifier, such as New York corporate moving services to Boston phrase match won’t show ads for searches, where the direction is reversed.
Phrase Match and and Broad Match Keywords Are Combining Together
So basically what’s happening is they’re kind of smashing these things together. Now, the reason why this kind of stinks is because if you specifically want to show up for moving services, New York to Boston, and you might not want to show up for free moving services to New York to Boston, potentially what they’re telling you is you’re still going to show up now, what do we do about this?
Focus on Negative Keywords
Like, is Google not going to work anymore? Yes, it’s still going to work. It’s still going to do this. So this is what recommend that you do to your campaigns to make sure that you are not showing up for certain phrases and things like that.
So from what it sounds like I haven’t fully dove in there, mess with it yet because it hasn’t fully taken effect on my end. But what I’m thinking is what we’ll see is what you’ll still do is you’ll still use phrase, match keywords and exact match keywords. But what you’re going to have to be heavily focused on is your negative keywords. So you’re going to have to have tons of negative keywords in there and you’re going to have to make sure you’re constantly adding negative keywords and really micro-managing your Google ad account for awhile, um, to keep it running into and to keep it going.
Conclusion to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 152
So that’s going to wrap up this video again. Don’t be too worried. We’re still going to be okay. Google, still going to work just again, make sure you’re using your exact exact match keywords and then make sure you go in there now. So thanks guys for watching this video.
