Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 149
Episode one 49 of the marketing life podcast. This is Taylor Timothy, your host. And today, guys, we’re gonna be talking about a tool called Google optimize. It’s a tool out there that offers that allows you to split test. So let’s not waste any more time and dive right in.
What is Google Optimize?
So guys, Google optimize. What is it like I said, it’s a split testing tool out there. The Google offers that allows you to split tests.
What is Split Testing?
Now, what is split testing? Basically what split testing is, is you’re taking one thing and you’re comparing it and testing it against another. So an example that you’re going to use here in Google optimize is your landing page. So you’re going to take a landing page. And then after that, you’re going to take a, another landing page and you’re going to test them against each other and see which one converts better. So it’s super important that you’re actually doing this. So, you know, which page is converting better than the other one.
Then you’re constantly split testing, making more adjustments. And what you’re going to do is you’re going to increase conversion. So that is the whole goal with split testing and why you should be doing it on a regular basis.
Rundown of Google Optimize
So I’m actually going to show you guys kind of Google optimize. We’re going to go check it out. I’m going to share my screen with you and we’re going to, we’re going to kind of show you how it works. So here we go. I’m going to share this. Okay. So here inside of Google optimize, um, here’s Google optimize. How it’s kinda set up is you have a account and then you have containers in there. So basically, um, what you have to do is you have to come in here and you have to create your account and you have to link it.
Okay. So here, basically, you’re gonna click on, let’s go. So inside of Google, you have all these options. You’re gonna create your experience or your name of the, your experience. And then you’re going to tell them your URL. So we’ll just go test and we’ll do Taylor timothy.com.
Different Ways to Split Test
Now there’s all these different ways that we can test here. Um, from my personal experience, um, using the AB test or the multi-variant test is awesome. Um, the redirect test is awesome as well. Now, these tests, and here from my experience, you can actually go in and you can change the text inside of optimize, which I personally don’t like now, if you like that situation, that’s awesome.
Redirect Test
I prefer using a redirect test. So basically there’s a URL. If you go to that URL, it will redirect the user to different URLs. Um, these tools are cool, but in my own opinion, they’re still in beta. So let’s just click here on the redirect test and create it. So basically you’ll get this option here. You’re going to add variants. So basically you have your URL page. If you add a variant, basically it would be like tailored timothy.com backslash test page or something. So you just tell it to redirect to this page.
Link Google Analytics
You’re actually going to leave this alone and then you’re going to link to Google analytics. So you’re, you need to make sure your Google analytics codes on your page.
Use Google Optimize
And then what you’re going to do is you’re going to tell Google what objective you’re actually trying to optimize for. So in my case, my business, it might be the free marketing strategy or the other page. I’m sorry, it’ll be a free marketing strategy. So if you’re like a plumber or something, you might be doing a free inspection, a free audit, whatever it might be, but you’re need to tell Google the objective. So what the objective is, is also going to be the goal inside of Google analytics.
50/50 Split for Traffic Allocation
And then if you want, you know, you can, um, get notifications and stuff like that. Or the thing that you need to tell it right here, though, is on the traffic allocation. Make sure you do a 50 50 split. Now, if you do a 75 25 split, then you’re technically not perfectly splitting it. You’re not splitting up the traffic. So you need to split the traffic up 50 50, and then you can just go ahead and create your entire thing. She said, start after you get all those things set up. Once you link to analytics, once you set your right goals or objective, and then you can start it and you can actually schedule it as well.
How Much Traffic Do I Need to Split Test?
Most of the time, I would just let it run until you feel like there’s enough traffic. Um, now the question might be, well, how much traffic do I need to split test? Well, technically you don’t need, you could have a visitor a day and you can technically split test it. But to know, um, in my own opinion, my rule of thumb is a hundred. Visitors will let you know when you can make adjustments. So you need a hundred people to come to your site to decide if that decide which variant is actually going to win.
