Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 140

Episode, one 40 of the marketing life podcast. This is Tim or Timothy, your host. And today, guys, we’re going to be talking about an update that’s happening over on the Google paid ad platform. Basically, it’s going to, we’re going to talk about the search terms, updates that is going to be happening. So let’s not waste any more time and dive right in.

Changes to Google Search Terms

So guys, basically Google came out and said this.

The changes to the search term report.

We are updating the search terms report to only include terms that were searched by a significant number of users. As a result, you may say, see fewer terms in your report going forward.

What Does This Mean?

So if you are new to Google paid ads, basically what this is telling us is right now, if you go in and set up a search campaign, there’s, there’s an area in there that’s called search terms. And basically inside of search terms, it will tell you what has been searched and how your keywords may have been triggered during this event. And then what it allows you to do is basically say, you know what, Google this search term isn’t for me, I’m going to use this as what we call a negative search term or a negative keyword.

And you can basically eliminate it and say, you know what, never show up for this again. So a Google is coming out and saying is basically, they’re not going to show us all of the terms. It’s going to just show us some of those terms.

What Do Advertisers Need to do to Protect Ad Budgets?

So what do we have to do as advertisers to protect our ad budgets to, to moving forward with this event? So my own opinion about this is this is dumb. Google. You should just leave it alone. It’s perfectly fine. Don’t change something. That’s that’s not, it’s not broken guys. Like why change it? But anyways, this is how we’re going to combat it. Okay.

1. Be Specific with Keywords

The first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to be very specific with the keywords that we actually use. So for example, like if you’re a plumber, you’re going to go after us very specific term, you’re going to use like exact match or phrase match and say plumber near me. Okay. And then you’re going to only use that keyword and that’s about it.

2. Add Negative Keywords

Then what you’re going to do is you’re going to go in there and you’re going to add negative keywords and be very thought like this. Think about this guys, and add as many keywords as possible that you don’t want to show up for as well. And this is how you’re going to protect your ad account, protect your ad budgets.

Google is Taking Away Our Data

So basically Google’s just taking away some of their data and not giving us all the information that’s basically what’s happening. So I think it’s kind of dumb. Is Google still going to work? Heck yeah, it’s going to work. You’re just going to have to be very strategic about what you do and so on and so forth.
